Although many jam bands produce multiple albums, such as Buckethead’s 24 album discography, live shows are criteria for being considered a jam band. The live shows put on by jam bands is a big attraction to most people. Artists often display elaborate lighting and smoke effects in their performances. The lighting includes many different colors of lights washing over the audience or having strobe-like effects. An example of the entertainment a jam bands performance provides is how Phish put on shows that got the crowd to interact. A technique they used was to have gigantic beach balls tossed around the crowd pressing a chord each time the balls were bounced. Another important aspect of being considered a jam band is the improvisation involved in live shows. Pseudopod demonstrates improvisation as they often play longer versions of their original songs. They do this by adding new beats off the top of their head as they play without pausing. Such performances keep old fans coming back and new fans being sure to come to a live show again.
